About Kim Lockhart

For 20 years, I taught in a high-needs elementary school, learning how to make reading research work in the reality of the classroom. Today, I bring that experience to educators across Canada and the United States, bridging the gap between evidence and implementation.

My Story

For over two decades, I’ve taught language and literacy to second-language learners, developing my skills in France, Singapore, and Mexico before honing my practice with students in Kingston, Ontario. My international teaching experience shaped the work I do today: bridging the gap between the reading research and real-life classroom practice.

As a literacy consultant, professional learning leader, and public speaker, I combine a deep knowledge of reading research with years of experience putting that research into classroom practice. My work focuses on Structured Literacy and evidence-based reading and writing instruction, with particular expertise in supporting struggling readers, students with dyslexia, and students learning French as a Second Language (FSL).

I hold a Master of Education from Queen’s University and an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator certificate. I have trained thousands of educators across Canada and the United States, taught preservice teachers in three Canadian Faculties of Education, and served as a Content Contributor for the Ontario Ministry of Education’s revised Language Curriculum, helping align provincial literacy instruction with current reading research.

My work has taken me to school districts, universities, and conferences across Canada, including guest lectures and keynote presentations at Queen’s University, Brock University, Trent University, Western University, and the University of British Columbia.

How We Work Together

Every engagement starts with a conversation, not a proposal template.

1.png

Initial Meeting

Together, we discuss your professional learning goals, where you are now, and the steps to get you to where you need to be. I work with you to design a professional learning plan tailored to your goals—from single sessions to multi-part workshop series, and from interactive small-group learning to division- or district-wide presentations and keynotes.

2.png

Tailored Professional Learning

I customize professional learning sessions that align with your school’s professional learning goals, educators’ needs, and students’ learning and language needs (English/French/ both). You determine what your educators and students need and I customize a plan and deliver it.

3.png

Delivery

In Person or Virtual. Sessions run on-site or online, with a strong focus on bridging the reading research and classroom implementation; my goal is to help educators work smarter, not harder.

4.png

Follow-Up Support

The work doesn’t end when the workshop ends! Each workshop concludes with recommended “next steps”, including supporting resources, discussion questions, and a “podcast pairing” to continue the learning journey toward long-term implementation and student success!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language, making reading, spelling, and sometimes writing harder, even for students who are bright and hardworking. It isn't about intelligence or effort, and it isn't something a child grows out of on their own. With explicit, structured instruction, most dyslexic students learn to read well.

My child is struggling to read in French Immersion. Does that mean we should switch to English?

Not necessarily. Reading difficulties in French Immersion are often the same underlying difficulties a child would have learning to read in English, showing up in a second language. Structured literacy support, delivered in French, can often address the difficulty directly without a program switch. This is exactly the gap my work fills.

What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is the body of research, built over decades, on how children actually learn to read and write. It points to explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, rather than guessing strategies or exposure alone.

Do you offer workshops in French as well as English?

Yes. Most workshops are offered in English, but I can also offer sessions in both English and French, which is unusual in this field. Most Science of Reading professional development is offered strictly in English- I offer sessions in both English and French.

What is Structured Literacy, and how is it different from balanced literacy?

Structured literacy vs. balanced literacy comes up a lot, and the difference matters. Structured literacy teaches reading skills explicitly, systematically, and in a set sequence, with a strong emphasis on the code (phonics and decoding) alongside language comprehension. Balanced literacy leans more heavily on exposure to books and context-based guessing, which research shows leaves many students, especially dyslexic and struggling readers, behind.

What age groups or grades do your workshops cover?

Kindergarten through Grade 8, including reading intervention teachers and Special Education staff. Sessions may also be grouped by division (Kindergarten, Primary, Junior, Intermediate) or can be tailored to a specific grade.

What is the Orton-Gillingham approach?

Orton-Gillingham is an evidence-based, structured, multisensory approach to teaching reading and spelling that was originally developed to teach students with dyslexia how to read and spell. It is one approach to literacy instruction within the broader Structured Literacy framework, and it is this training that I took to learn how to more effectively teach my students to read, spell and write.

Do you work directly with School Districts, or only individual schools?

Both. I've delivered single workshops for individual schools as well as 1-year, multi-session professional learning series for entire school districts, including 10-part Science of Reading Learning series previously delivered to schools in Maine (Holliston Schools); Vancouver, British Columbia (Brockton School), and Moosejaw, Saskatchewan (École St. Margaret). Each session builds on the previous session and provides opportunities for discussion and feedback.

Can you speak at our conference or professional development day?

Yes. I've delivered keynote addresses at several Faculties of Education,  as well as professional associations, and school district PD days across Canada and the U.S. See the Services page for keynote topics, or get in touch to discuss your event.

Are you available for virtual workshops, or only in person?

Both. I deliver workshops and consulting sessions in person and virtually, depending on what works best for your team.

How do I book you for a workshop, keynote, or consulting?

Use the contact form and select the option that best describes your inquiry. I typically respond within a few business days to discuss your needs, timeline, and next steps.
